UV Absorbers

Description of the UV Absorbers

UV absorbers preferentially absorb the incident UV radiation
and protect the polymer from the radiation. They absorb UV
light and convert it into heat. Exposure to sunlight and some
artificial lights can adversely affect the useful life of polymers.
A process called photodegradation occurs when UV radiation
breaks  down  the  chemical  bonds  in  a  polymer, ultimately
causing cracking, chalking, colour changes  and  the  loss  of
physical   properties. The  role  of  the  UV  absorbers   is   to
interrupt the photo-oxidation process. The term UV  absorber
is usually used  to  describe  compounds  that  do  not  affect
visible light transparency.  Such UV absorbers are a class  of
stabilizers with intense absorption up to 350 to 370 nm but are
transparent in  the visual—also known as UV screening agents
and ultraviolet stabilizers. UV  light  consists  of  three  different
kinds, including different wavelengths; UV A, UV B & UV C. UV
A is strong and most dangerous for polymers. This ranges from
315nm to 400nm, which needs  to  be  absorbed  to  protect  the
polymers.  We  can  divide  the  UV  absorbers  into  groups  with
different chemicals structure.

Plastic laser welding is a new plastic processing technology. It originated in 1970 with carbon dioxide laser welding plastic film when lasers were first demonstrated as suitable for welding plastics. But because the carbon dioxide laser is very cumbersome and the transmission performance is poor, the operation is very inconvenient. And as the diode laser and semiconductor laser became more popular, the carbon dioxide laser gradually withdrew from the field of plastic welding.

    The right laser absorber

The diode laser has a wavelength of 800 ~ 1000nm, and the semiconductor laser has a wavelength of 1064nm, both in the near-infrared range. In this near-infrared wavelength range, most plastics are transparent, and both lasers can penetrate the plastic very easily. Finding a suitable laser absorber is essential to develop plastic laser welding technology further. This absorber must meet the following conditions: Strong absorption of 800 ~ 1064nm infrared light; Very stable under the heat of at least 300 ℃; Good dispersion, compatible with polymer materials; High visible light transmittance that can be used with different pigments. Omnistab NIR is a dispersion of nanoparticles in an organic carrier. The particles absorb solar irradiation in the Near Infrared region. The absorption spectrum can be adjusted to customer requirements.

Benzoate is a free radical scavenger that, in some cases, also acts as a UV absorber. Hydroxybenzoates can perform synergistically with HALS to provide superior performance. For example is the  Omnistab UV 1 , a liquid formamidine-type ultraviolet absorber. Used for a wide range of polymers and applications, including polyurethane, polyvinylchloride(PVC), acryl resin and polyester etc. Imparts very good light stability. Or  Omnsitab UV 3638  offers very strong and broad UV absorption with no colour contribution. Possesses very good stabilization for polyesters and polycarbonates. Provides low volatility. Imparts high UV screening efficiency.

Cyanoacrylate UV absorbers offer outstanding light stability to a range of polymers. We offer three distinct Cyanocrylate UV absorbers within our range of products:  Omnistab UV 3030  which is a low-volatility grade. Offering excellent light stability engineering polymers. With the greatest thermal stability with no inherent color. It is able to stabilize extremely transparent polymers at high temperatures for extrusion. Particularly, it is specifically ideal to be used in PET and PC co-extrusions due to its integration with the process of production and the excellent stabilizing effect.  Omnistab UV3035  is a great stability in light to a range of polymers. It is for instance, it has outstanding light absorption properties and excellent compatibility with a variety of substrates.  Omnistab UV3039  provides excellent light stability to various kinds of polymers. It is, for instance, ideal for stabilizing PVC and PVC plastisols. It is also used in PUR and polyesters, as well as PMMA. The usage amounts for Omnistab UV 3039 are between 0.1 to 1.0 percent, based on the substrate and the performance requirements in the end-user.

A type of UV-absorber that is a nickel quencher for polyolefins can be found in our  Omnistab UV 1084NQ . It is a high-quality pesticide-resistant system. It can create a synergistic effect when combined with a Benzophenone UV absorber. It is utilized in polyethylene greenhouse films.

Triazine UV absorbers enable polyesters and polycarbonates to have more resist to weathering than traditional benzotriazole UV absorbers. They are suitable for polyalkene terephthalates and Naphthalates, linear and branched polycarbonates, modified polyphenylene compounds, as well as a variety of high-performance plastics. For instance,  Omnistab UV 1577 TF  is a Toluene Free triazine grade made of hydroxyphenyl. The UV absorber acts as. Has very low volatility and great compatibility with many co-additives, polymers and resin compositions. Second,  Omnistab UV 1164  is an effective light stabilizer. It has high intrinsic UV stability with minimal color change. Has a low interplay with metals. It has a long-lasting, durable properties. It is very compatible with other stabilizers.

Benzophenone UV absorbers enable the polymer to retain colour, gloss, and physical properties under long-term UV light exposure, regarded as an effective solution for polymer degradation caused by high-energy light. As a result, they have excellent performance in the spectrum of 275nm and 350nm.

Benzotriazole UV absorbers are extremely robust and broad-range UV absorption characteristics across the entire spectrum of UV. Specially designed for polymers as well as coatings. Because of its extensive UV absorption capabilities it provides superior security for polymers. It is also suitable for top coats and other different substrates that are sensitive to light. It is advised for thermoset plastics, organic substrates, and coatings that serve as weathering. It could be used in conjunction with the other stabilizers for light in the HALS class. It is for instance, to provide coatings, plastics and paints the best protection against cracking, gloss reduction colour change, blistering chalking , and delamination. To summarize they are extremely effective across the spectrum between 350nm and 400nm.

Omnistab UV blends are able to absorb UV radiation, and thus shield the polymer from radiation. They absorb light from UV and convert it to heat. Exposed to sunlight or artificial light sources can have adverse effect on the longevity of polymers. Our blends consist with two, or even more distinct ultraviolet absorbers, also known as Light stabilizers.

High molecular weight formamidine type ultraviolet light absorber is our  Omnistab UV 3 . For example, used for a wide range of polymers and applications including polyurethanes (Spandex, TPU, RIM), engineering plastics (PET, PC, PC/ABS, PA, PBT). Offers high thermal stability. Provides very good light absorbing characteristics and good compatibility and solubility with various polymers and solvents.

UV absorbers preferentially absorb incident UV radiation, and thus shield the polymer from radiation. They absorb light from UV and convert it to heat. They are usually divided into two groups, however there are some distinct features in our product line as well as and others.
